Commesso fiorentino is a particular mosaic technique dating back to the times of Cosimo de’ Medici; Maestri Iacopo and Bruno Lastrucci are among the latest heirs to this unique tradition.
Today, just as in those days, each mosaic work is handmade. Stones are carefully selected from a wide archive of mineral ores worldwide and cut “a traforo” (openwork) in specific points so as to ensure the expected colours and textures. Later, they are shaped abiding by precise contours, polished and joined together with natural glues so as to create the pattern. The final result is an astonishingly beautiful painting made of inlaid stone.
