Undisputed masters of the technique, rare in Italy, of stained-glass windows, and specifically in the dalle de verre variant, the Toniutti family has always been able to turn the designs of important artists into a solid, rough, multifaceted craft object. Indeed, they manage to enhance contemporary artworks, by skillfully combine the immateriality of light with the brutality of concrete and the languages of contemporary architecture. In the field of mosaics, this singular workshop stands out for its creativity in creating textures in which the irregularity of the tesserae and the discrepancies in their thicknesses give the decorated surfaces a robust vitality.

Studio Fenice’s work in the field of restoration is their greatest source of prestige. Admirable is the depth with which they analyse the issues posed by the deterioration of materials and structures in stained glass windows, fragile intermediaries of lighting in architecture. Valeria Bertuzzi and Americo Corallini’s work is characterized by two apparently colliding aspects: a rigorous approach to working practices and the scientific analysis of materials and techniques is paired with their appreciation for “tactile values”, essentially artisanal features resulting from the work of skilled eyes and hands, which give each piece a sense of time. Having absorbed the ways and traditions of centuries of glassmaking techniques, Studio Fenice favours a traditional style for its original stained glass, thus becoming bearers of the same warmth and atmosphere which ancient stained glass windows were able to convey.

I met Alessandro Cuccato, founder of Vetroricerca, while he was working with Leonardo Nava on San Francesco al Fopponino’s stained glass windows, in Milan. I appreciate their ability to imagine new ways and create luminous patterns which also serve as sculptural surfaces, giving a great variety of material textures and surfaces to their stained glass windows and artworks.
