Constituted by Maria Deidda, Tiziana Sirigu, Melissa Vargiu, Angela Cannas, Maria Serrau, this company saw many generations come and go and has recently hit the joyful landmark of 50 years of activity. Their refined creations stand out for their high craftsmanship quality and sophisticated stylistic research. Thinking back to when I met Francesca, the image that comes to my mind is her, working at the potter’s wheel, with her hands spontaneously creating gracious, simple and powerful shapes. Francesca is able to interpret the lines and symbols of the ancient Nuragic culture with remarkable aesthetic balance, resulting in a peculiar ceramic production characterized by essential and, at the same time, very unusual shapes, decorated with accurate and striking graphic lines.

I met Francesca thanks to the project “Vetrina dell’Artigianato Sardo”, an institutional website dedicated to showcasing Sardinian craftsmanship. Upon meeting her, I initially asked myself how could she, such a young, gentle and delicate looking woman, carry on this line of work. Then, I realized that the passion which drives her to keep the family tradition of wrought iron alive, is much stronger than the actual strength needed to strike and bend the iron. Her style is experimental and her creations combine aesthetic and functionality.

I met Elena during the project DOMO – 19th Biennale of Sardinian craftsmanship, which was awarded the prestigious Compasso D’oro prize in 2011. Her professional and personal qualities won me over from the very beginning. Together we conceived an item which would join the art of weaving to another typical element of her home town, Urzulei: asphodel’s fibre, which is traditionally used to create baskets and “corbule” (traditional handle-free baskets) of simple and refined beauty. Since then, we had many chances to collaborate, united by the passion for the same art and the desire to preserve a knowledge which is so precious for our land.

The soul of Prof. Cannas textile workshop are Tomasina, Stefania and Giovanna, three artisans of great value and skill, passionately carrying on the art of weaving by using traditional and exclusively manual looms and working inside the former Centro Pilota Isola in Aggius, in the heart of the Gallura region (Sardinia). I first met them during an important documentation work, and since then, with their strong hued textiles and characteristic compositions, they participated in many projects I have overseen, proudly representing their community’s textile tradition.
