BIO

Born in Naples, Rosa Maria Villani started her career within the Italian Mint as a very young graduate from Rome’s Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia (Medal Art School) and from Sapienza University, where she had studied History of Art. In 1991 she started working at the Italian Mint as an engraver and sketcher and, from 1993, as a close collaborator to Laura Cretara, her former teacher at Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia.
In 2001, she started her educational activity as the curator of a new restoration course and as a moulding technique teacher. Nowadays, she is active in the School’s organisation and in the artistic direction of educational projects, also addressing productive activities and creative product research.
Over time, her career, encompassing restoration of numismatic metal or wax items and strenuous research activity, included publications, conferences and external teaching assignments. The School’s history, the creation of a unified Mint and the relationship between art and Metiers d’art within the context of manufacturing output have been at the core of her investigation.

Galleria 291est is an interesting copperplate workshop I have just had an opportunity to visit thanks to a graphic engraver I hold in high regard and who is collaborating with them. Here, young people are creating artistic productions connected to top quality art print. They are collaborating with artists working in different directions (some of them are tackling art print for the very first time thanks to the workshop) for exhibitions and for extremely accurate and demanding editions. They also cooperate with other initiatives connected to quality art print, approaching the “trade” in a serious way, without losing sight of creativity and research. This is how savoir-faire and art research walk gorgeously hand in hand in a small workshop, where Giorgio Upiglio's spirit still seems to be present.

Bottega Franchi is a most interesting workshop. Soon after starting his activity, its founder, Fausto Maria Franchi (whose works have been shown in important dedicated exhibitions) combined artistic research with product design, applying the ancient chisel and lost wax techniques in a modern, innovative way. The same approach is being carried forward by the new generation, thanks to his son Enrico Franchi, who developed his own research in other interesting fields, extending his melting techniques with different metals from jewellery to sculpture, as well as creating and designing jewels and other artefacts.
