Elena Mulas initially learned the art or weaving from the women in her family, then by practising on the manual loom. Her knowledge of traditional techniques and decorations blends with the competence she acquired working in a textile company from a very young age. Today her workshop, Artessile, with over 30 years of activity, is an important reference point in the field of interior design textile manufacture.
Elena Mulas creates home decors accessories such as carpets, tapestries, curtains, bedding and towels, all customizable and made of exquisite fabrics, including plant based elements inlays, such as asphodel’s fibres. The ornamental patterns come from the Sardinian tradition: flowers, plants, animals and geometric shapes. The artisan combines these elements in modern compositions able to complement even the most contemporary settings.

I met Elena during the project DOMO – 19th Biennale of Sardinian craftsmanship, which was awarded the prestigious Compasso D’oro prize in 2011. Her professional and personal qualities won me over from the very beginning. Together we conceived an item which would join the art of weaving to another typical element of her home town, Urzulei: asphodel’s fibre, which is traditionally used to create baskets and “corbule” (traditional handle-free baskets) of simple and refined beauty. Since then, we had many chances to collaborate, united by the passion for the same art and the desire to preserve a knowledge which is so precious for our land.
