In Venice, between the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Basilica dei Frari, there is a paper craft workshop, founded in 2008 by Elisabetta Casaburi: the Carterìa ai Frari.
Here, handmade paper products are produced, which are folded, printed or bound to create notebooks, albums, artists’ books and accessories.
Elisabetta has studied papermaking and binding techniques, both traditional and more innovative and experimental. Continuous practice and research have enabled her to get to know the material in depth, and to create artefacts that combine design, tradition and contemporaneity.
In her workshop, she holds courses in bookbinding and origami, and hosts important teachers and master craftsmen, including Susanna Bianca, Felice Botta, Gianni Raineri and Vittorio Martini, to promote this art and make it known to the general public.
It has collaborated with Ca’ Foscari University, organising workshops and guided tours, and the European Artistic Craftsmen Days in 2023.
Together with other craft workshops, it set up cArte – Museo Diffuso della Carta e della Stampa di Venezia (Venice Museum of Paper and Printing), as part of the C.Ar.T.E. – Carta Arte Tipografia Editoria (2020/22) project. He participated in SERIE UNICA – Craft Design Made in Veneto (2022/23), a project organised by Fondo Plastico on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of UNESCO, for which he also created the logo.
