Gabriele Gelatti is a master craftsman who carries on a typical Ligurian craft and tradition: Risseau, a peculiar mosaic technique in which designs are composed using pebbles instead of tiles. This kind of workmanship has been used in Liguria for centuries, to decorate churchyards and the gardens of villas and palaces, as well as the main city squares.
Gabriele mostly makes claddings, often floorings, wall and ceiling decorations, as well as hanging pieces or large panels. He is mostly active in Genoa and throughout the region, but also all over Italy and abroad, and he also deals with maintaining and restoring antique Risseau. His mosaics are entirely handmade, using only natural and carefully selected materials such as pebbles, lime and special sands which he directly gathers on local beaches and in the area. His artworks defy time just like ancient mosaics, since he uses the same formulas and processing techniques. His works can be found in numerous private villas in Italy and abroad.
