Silvia Zanchi is a luthier specializing in making and restoring plucked instruments, mainly classical concert guitars, historical and early music instruments.
After graduating from Bergamo’s Art School with a specialty in Cultural Heritage Cataloguing and Conservation, she studied at the “Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano” (Milan’s Civic School of Lutherie), under the guidance of masters Lorenzo Lippi, Tiziano Rizzi, Aldo Illotta and Gabriele Negri. She worked with Lorenzo Frignani conducting an in-depth study on the manufacturing techniques of plucked instruments, with a focus on classical guitars. She published a series of three technical textbooks entitled “Gommalacca”, in collaboration with professor Claudio Canevari.
In 2006 she started teaching varnishing and construction techniques for plucked instruments at Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan, and in 2020 she also started teaching restoration at CrForma, in Cremona. She showcased her pieces both in Italy and abroad, and her instruments are played and highly regarded all over the world.
